The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
