PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 different times.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck two times late to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen years.
