Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
