Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
